MOVIES THAT HAVE LEFT THEIR MARK (AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER)
Bambi
The first movie to ever make me cry. (I have this
thing about dying animals) Now that I think about it, I didn't actually
LIKE this movie.
Braveheart
Not that I have to explain, I think it's pretty
obvious. The photography was incredible, the music was beautifully
haunting and Mel Gibson is a hottie. Plus anything Scottish has always
fascinated the heck out of me.
Calamity
Jane
Because I LOVE Doris Day and she was sort of a tom-boy,
too.
Changeling,
The
My mom's ex-boyfriend, Paul Rothery, was in this
movie. My sister and I ADORED him. Last I heard he'd moved to
England to work on a TV series called Spatz and I haven't heard from him
since 1980. By the way? If anyone out there knows where he is, point
him in the direction of this website or my email -- I'd love to get in touch
with him again.
Chaplin
Because never in a million years would I ever have
thought that was Robert Downey Jr. The guy is a genius.
Cutting
Edge, The
Some pretty funny dialogue with snippets like:
"I swear, you let me down and
it'll take them a month to count the blade marks on your back."
Demolition
Man
Because, not only is Sandra Bullock one of my favourite
actresses, but she's got that shining personality that was especially compelling
in this movie.
"Looks like you met his
meat. You really licked his ass." (Lenina Huxley)
Escape
to Witch Mountain
I always wanted to have cool powers. Plus I loved
Kim Richards' beautiful long hair. I used to put my poncho on over my face
and flip it over the back of my head so it would stream down my back like a long
woolen version of hair. (I didn't say I was the brightest kid on the
block)
Ferris
Beuller's Day Off
Hey, who didn't want to cut class? And I
had such a crush on Matthew Broderick. The bastard married Sarah Jessica
Parker. (Oh well, at least he married a Parker)
Freaky
Friday
What kid didn't think their parents' had it
easier? I thought the movie was just plain cool.
Housekeeping
My first job as an extra. I can't even see me in
the movie, but what the heck. It was a cool experience anyway.
Logan's
Run
A classic. I can forgive it the cheesy special
effects because back in the 70's that movie rocked my world.
Long
Kiss Goodnight, The
Geena Davis in the best kick-ass movie I've ever
seen. Nothing like a tough heroine to beat up the bad guys. I loved
this movie!
Parent
Trap, The
When I was a kid I wanted to be one of two
things: 1) a genie 2) a twin (Oh well, at least I got to
watch movies about them, even though Hayley Mills wasn't a real twin - she did a
damn fine job performing both roles.)
Princess
Bride, The
Just a really funny cute movie. It popped into my
head when I was thinking of movies I love so here it is.
"My nayme ees Inigo Montoya.
You keeled my fadder. Prepare to die."
Ref,
The
I loved the barbs back and forth between the actors in
this movie. Classically funny. And I LOVE Kevin Spacey - he's
priceless.
"You know, you and my wife have a lot in common.
You both think you have some right to life working out the way you want it to,
and when it doesn't, you get to act the way you want. The only trouble with
that is someone has to be responsible. I'd love to run around and take
classes and play with my inner-self! I'd love the freedom to be some
@#$%^&-off criminal with no responsibilities, except I don't have the
time! But you don't see me with a gun. And you don't see me
sleeping with someone else. You think my life turned out the way I
wanted because I live in this house? You think every morning I wake up,
look in the mirror and say 'Gee I'm glad I'm me and not some 19-year-old
billionaire rock star with the body of an athlete and a 24-hour
erection!' No I don't! So just excuse the @#$% out of
me!"
Risky
Business
Besides Tom Cruise? A coming-of-age movie where
that sex on the train was probably the hottest thing I'd ever seen. (Gimme
a break, I was 15)
Rocky
Horror Picture Show, The
Well it's a classic cult film, of course it's going to
be in here. Plus, it was just really sexy the way Tim Curry strutted about
in those garters and that makeup. Am I weird?
She's
Having a Baby
It had to do with struggling to accept that marriage is
not a me anymore, it's a we. I kind of "got it". It didn't
do too well at theatres though, I think. Oh well.
Soylent
Green
One of the first weird science fiction movies that made
an indelible mark on me. It was a BIG deal when you're 9 years old.
Tommy
A wicked Rock Opera that had so many stars and some
classically whacked out subplots that it just had to make this list. Plus,
it's another 70's movie and it affected me, so here it is. Plus listening
to The Who was a real treat, I even have the soundtrack.
What
Women Want
Hands down: Mel Gibson dancing to Frank Sinatra
and waxing his own hairy little legs.
Yellow
Submarine
A really cool animated Beatles flick. I loved it.
